Study no. 48 [catalog]
Performance Instructions
Different versions of this score require different numbers of players, but the instructions are the same. Each player is assigned one aggregate (an aggregate contains 15 black and white symbols along a horizontal line). Prior to performance, each player determines 15 distinct sounds, generally short, keeping in mind that any sound may follow any other sound quite quickly. Each of these sounds should be assigned to one of the 15 black and white nodes (circles). Each time the attack cursor, indicated by the circle moving along arcs along the top of the horizontal line, reaches one of the nodes (black or white circles), the player should play the sound that is assigned to that node.
The arc's color (black, red or green) can be assigned to dynamics, with red meaning F, green meaning MF, and black meaning P (or however the ensemble decides to interpret them).
Each sound should be played as consistently as possible throughout, and any desire to interpret the score in a musical way should be squashed immediately.
