Study no. 40 [pulseight]
Performance Instructions
for 8 clarinets (or any combination of strings and winds).
Prior to performance, each player is assigned one numbered circle (1-8). Only one player should be assigned to each numbered circle.
When a player's numbered circle is within one of the 8 larger circles, some sonic event should be played each time one of the rotating attack cursors crosses the event node at 12 o'clock. This sonic event should have a strong attack and fast decay.
When a player's numbered circle moves to another large circle, the player sustains some pitch until arriving at the next circle. This pitch should be predetermined, and should stay consistent throughout the duration of the piece. Players are warned of an impending move by a converging red circle.
Each player's sonic events are open to their own discretion, excepting the sustained movement pitch, which should be determined prior to performance, and stay consistent throughout the piece. All players may play the same pitch, or not.
The score should be projected for both the audience and performers to see.
Duration: 8 minutes or more.
